Reformer Pilates Training with Paula at Wholistics in North Wales PA
Yes- I am an Herbalist AND a Reformer Pilates instructor too!
In almost 15 years of teaching Reformer Pilates, it's been very clear that:
a) herbal medicine concentrates on your health from the inside out
b) exercise works you from the outside in
c) Reformer Pilates is uniquely able to improve mind, body, AND spirit thanks to its thoughtful combination of full-body movements and breathing control
Pilates teaches strength, flexibility, coordination, awareness, mindful concentration, adaptability, self confidence and resilience- all traits essential to overall health.
What class is good for beginners? And other FAQ'sWhat is the difference between the 2 pilates class types? Which is better for beginners?
I created the Pilates Improve and Pilates Explore classes specifically so that beginners could take either class. You can schedule based on your calendar, not the class type!
Pilates Improve classes are based on the idea of an Ashtanga yoga class- it’s the same full-body set of exercises each time, with minimum repetitions. As you learn the routine you become quicker at transitions set-ups and can maximize your practice of the form and execution in each rep. There’s a peace in knowing what will come next. Pilates Explore classes are the “everything else” classes! We might explore a theme like “using the pilates ring” or “single limb exercises” or “balance challenges”. Or I might ask for special requests to learn something more deeply, like the pelvic floor or the breathing practice, or for body areas to focus on. It’s amazing how often the class that gathers all have similar issues like back pain or trouble keeping a neutral spine or hip tightness, and I can teach a class that speaks to everyone’s needs. Why does Reformer Pilates cost more?
There’s 2 reasons, really. The class size is limited to just 4- we’re not exactly a group class, but not quite a private session either, so the price reflects that middle ground.
Also, the sheer amount of attention, correction, and detail you’ll get from your instructor Paula is also included in the price. You’re not just learning how to do a move, you’re learning how to move. You’re learning control and stability and balance and proprioception, in addition to strength and flexibility and mobility and self-empowerment. How many times a week should I do Reformer Pilates?
The standard answer is 2-3 times per week. In reality, it could be 1-5 times per week.
Once per week: you’ll maintain your current status quo Twice per week: you’ll see demonstrable changes in your body in about 6 months Thrice per week: you’ll see demonstrable changes in your body in about 3 months, and be well equipped to manage your chronic condition by then too 4+ times per week: you’ll see exponential improvement in the state of your spine health, strength and mobility, breath control and all around health in 3-4 weeks What is your pilates teaching style like?
My basic philosophy is this- in order to do well in pilates you need to move, learn something, and laugh. So we do all three! There’s levity, there’s pictures from my anatomy book, there’s a never-ending supply of factoids, and there’s hundreds and hundreds of exercises to practice so we never get bored.

Paula's Pilat-ers are saying:
I have been dealing with back pain (L4 & L5 bulging discs and Spondylolisthesis) for two years. In February, I learned about Wholistics Fitness. I signed up for physical therapy (even though I had a ton of PT somewhere else with no pain relief), and I signed up for Pilates Reformer. I had one month of PT with Dr. Brooke Love who is AWESOME and have been taking Pilates Reformer classes with Paula 3 days every week. Paula is incredible. She is very attentive in knowing what I can an can't do. Between Brooke and Paula, I have experienced little to no pain since March. Anyone dealing with back pain should sign up and get relief. My quality of life has changed drastically for the better. Thank you Brooke and Paula. I can't say enough good things about this place. - Pam, May 2017. She's still doing Pilates 4 years later!

Should you start with Private Sessions? Maybe not!
Some do need private sessions, usually because of very specific concerns like an injury or unusual issues. Even so, Pilates semi-privates classes at Wholistics are appropriate for people with:

Have you never done pilates before? It's really quite a remarkable practice.
The best thing about the years I've spent teaching pilates is the opportunity to work with SO MANY people, over so much time, and through various stages in their lives. It is just amazing to watch transformations happen, both inside the studio and out.
The Ah Ha! moments clients have are the most thrilling part. But the stories people tell about feats of strength and coordination they couldn't have done before pilates are a close second.
Try it! With me, or with someone closer to where you are. Try it with a teacher, in a class, so you have instruction and personalized cues and corrections. Give it a good shot- 10 to 20 classes. Most only need 1 or 2, truthfully, to be firmly convinced.
I work with people who are serious athletes, with people who absolutely hate exercising, with people who have significant musculo-skeletal issues, and with people so out of shape they're surprised at themselves for being in class at all. They are all ages (kids thru 80's!) and they all improve- they all get stronger and more resilient and ache less and get out of bed quicker and sleep more soundly. We humans are remarkably adapted for movement. Give yourself a chance.
